Autumn Equinox – Mabon

Or how to give thanks and prepare for colder times!

On September 22nd, the Sun enters the sign of Libra and sets the date for the Autumn Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere. Like the Libra glyph (the two balancing scales) this time of the year represents the perfect balance between night and day. It also indicates the end of Summer and the moment to reflect on all the good times we had, give thanks for the light, the heat and the harvest!

What can be done to celebrate this fantastic day?

The Autumn Equinox or Mabon in the Wiccan calendar invites us to look at what we have achieved, gathered and picked up on the way since the beginning of Spring. What have we learnt? How did we navigate different situations? What are our plans for the future? More than ever, this is the right time to prepare (quite literally, as in preserving foods but also on a more philosophical level in planning our next move!).

If you feel like celebrating Mabon, here are a few ideas!

  • Write a gratitude list (being thankful is the first step to manifesting your goals and the timing couldn’t be better!)
  • Bake some bread or cake and enjoy the richness of the food
  • Take a walk in the forest or the park to watch the leaves turn golden
  • Make some pickles or some preserved foods for the winter (apple puree is perfect!)
  • Have a glass (or more!) of wine or apple cider
  • Take some time to relax and daydream: good ideas will come up!
  • Work with citrine, amber, quartz, aventurine, these crystals are especially powerful now
  • If you can, donate to charities, to share is to care!

Wishing all of you a meaningful and blessed Mabon! May you find peace and harmony.

Is not this a true autumn day? Just the still melancholy that I love – that makes life and nature harmonize.
